Hard Knocks has come and gone, giving NY Jets fans the most in-depth look at the Jets team we’ve ever seen. The debate has already started as to whether the show will affect this season’s performance, are the Jets to distracted, etc. I’m going to come out and dispel those thoughts right now. Here are my five most important thoughts that I came away with from Hard Knocks.

  1. There is no lack of leadership on this team. I’m tired of hearing about the offense and how there are no leaders, and T-Rich is all they have. No leaders? What’s Nick Mangold, Damien Woody, D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Dustin Keller, Jerricho Cotchery? The team is full of veterans highly capable of leading the team. And I’m not even going to waste my time naming players on the defense. Bart Scott is obviously a superior leader and a great team player. Any leadership issues or questions are merely overblown media fixations.
  2. Don’t be worried about Mark Sanchez. It’s preseason! The guy was running an offense with a more vanilla playbook then his colored wristband from last year. Sanchize’s reads aren’t always great, but once he gets in a rhythm like last years playoff run, I’m confident Mark will get the job done.
  3. Don’t believe everything you see and hear on HBO. Obviously the point on the series is to make things interesting, but you can easily tell whats over emphasized and what isn’t. Jason Davis and his “skipped rep” at practice made him look lazy and un-coachable. But did he really skip the rep? On his Twitter last night he was none to happy about how he was portrayed, but hell, who would be? All I’m saying is don’t be too concerned over the emphasized points of Hard Knocks. Ultimately the show is made to produce great television, not give a 100% correct view of training camp.
  4. It’s no easy feat to make an NFL team. One of my favorite parts of this season of Hard Knocks was the way they focused on the rookies and players on the bubble a bit more-so then the super stars. Training camp means a lot more to a Danny Woodhead and a Chauncey Washington who are fighting to make a living and to fulfill a dream then the starting player. It’s one thing to read about someone getting cut online, but when you see Mike Tannenbaum tell them “Hey, we’re gunna cut ya”, then basically throw them out the door, you have to feel for the guys. The show definitely added a personal touch to all that.
  5. When Santonio Holmes returns from suspension, he is going to be very, very good. Granted Sanchez has to throw him the ball, but you can tell Santonio Holmes is a special athlete. I believe it was during the first episode of Hard Knock’s when the coaches deemed him the best athlete on the field which is something to look at when your on a field with that much talent.
