A Look at the 2010 Schedule

by Kyle on July 4, 2010

in New York Jets

The Jets have a pretty intense schedule in 2010.  With so many story lines and all the hype surrounding the team all eyes are gonna be on us. So without further ado, a look at the 2010 schedule.

Monday, August 16 2010.

Now normally, most other football fans do not care at all about preseason games. The starters are in for only a short amount of time and in the end it doesn’t amount to anything. Well, this time it’s different. That day, the first football game in the New Meadowlands stadium, is against the New York Giants. This is for bragging rights my friends. Whoever wins this game will be remembered forever for doing such. Every player on that field is going to be playing at 110 percent, and knowing Rex, I wouldn’t be surprised if he had some tricks up his sleeve, or coached this game like it was his last. This game is a must win. The Giants weren’t an impressive team last year. Brandon Jacobs was anemic last year, rushing for 835 yards on 220 attempts and if it wasn’t for Ahmad Bradshaw (who rushed for 57 less yards with 67 less attempts,) the Giants rushing game would have been pathetic last year. Eli Manning however, was impressive, passing for 4,021 yards with an overall 93.1 QB rating and Mario Manningham, Steve Smith, Hakeem Nicks and Kevin Boss will return, and they’re all good options for Eli. The Giants defense however, was absolutely awful, allowing 85 points against with 16 points for in two games. Look for D Coordinator Perry Fewell and D Line Coordinator Robert Nunn to hopefully turn things around for the Big Blue defensive unit. (Though I secretly hope not, I live in a house of Giants fans and nothing was more fun then them watching me cheer on Gang Green in the playoffs.) Nothing impressive in the offseason, either. Antonio Pierce was released, but Antrel Rolle was acquired. Look for him and rookie Jason Pierre-Paul to make moves this year. Also, Domenik Hixon and Chad Jones (who I wish a speedy recovery, might I add) were horribly injured, and will not be around for the ’10 season. Not that it really matters against us, it’s a preseason game, but important enough to be included nonetheless.

Giants Pros: Eli Manning & the WR corps, Ahmad Bradshaw.

Giants Cons: The Defense, Brandon Jacobs, Osi Umenyiora (?)

Advantage: Jets

Game 1 of the regular season opens up with a Monday night insta-classic against the Baltimore Ravens. This is another important game. Besides the fact that it’s our first regular season game in the new stadium, we’re doing everything possible to be a better version of the Ravens. We’ve got great defense, decent passing and a punishing running game. As well as that, as you all know Rex was formerly coaching with the Ravens, so expect a lot of talk comin’ from him. Also, expect fan favorites like Bart Scott and Jimmy Leonard laying out some devastating hits on their former teammates. The Ravens had an awesome offseason and every yard in this game will be paid for with blood and sweat. If you had the opportunity to see any game this season, this game would be my suggestion. It’s debatable that the Ravens had one of, if not THE best offseason in the NFL, bringing in Anquan Boldin (1,024 yards from 84 catches) and re-signing Derrick Mason to bolster the wide receivers and picked up Terrence Cody and Sergio Kindle in the draft. The Ravens have a very Jets-esque offense, with a great ground game and a QB good enough to get them by. Joe Flacco is a proven QB who threw for 3,613 on 499 attempts and Ray Rice had a great season with 1,339 yards with 254 attempts, and I loved watching him demolish the Patriots in the offseason. The Ravens have a good defense as well, until you get past the linebackers. The Ravens DB’s weren’t very impressive at all with the exception of Ed Reed, who is coming off major hip surgery, and is expected to miss the the opener. Sanchez has got to demonstrate he is capable of throwing the ball well, because it’s not going to be a walk in the park for our running backs.

Ravens Pros: Joe Flacco, Anquan Boldin, Ray Rice, the D-Line and LB’sof the defense.

Ravens Cons: The DB’s.

Advantage: Even.

The Patriots. Hated division rivals. Cheaters. But nonetheless, a good team. Even games against the Bills are always good, because something about a division game always brings out the best in you and your opponent, so an already good team like the Patriots always promises to be a good game. Except for last years second game. Sanchez threw that game away. God dammit Sanchez. If anything, the Patriots got worse in the offseason so we should take this opportunity to grind out a W. They lost Adalius Thomas, and Junior Seau retired, so a weak defense got slightly weaker.Tom Brady, who threw for4,398 yards with 565 attemps, has yet another weapon, in Julian Edelman which may prove to be a good thing if Wes Welker can’t return to his former self. Kevin Faulk, who went isn’t the best RB ever, he’s mainly a 3rd down kinda guy, but it’s no secret that the Patriots are a passing team. With all of the problems the Patriots have, count on Tom Bradys great passing to get them wins. We’ve shown that we can beat them before, take out Brady and his options, and let our offense score a couple touchdowns and if we do that again we’ve got this.

Patriots Pros: Tom Brady, WR Corps.

Patriots Cons: Running Game, Defense.

Advantage: Even.

The Dolphins in prime time. God, I hate them so much. More than any other team in sports EVER. I could care less if every single person related to that franchise would disappear, from the Front Office down to unborn future fans. Miami makes me seethe, which made the 2009 sweep even worse for me. Unfortunately, they always play their best football against Gang Green, so while the games are always great, they don’t always go our way. They definitley got better in the offseason, Brandon Marshall brings the promise of a legitimate #1 receiver to the table. Thankfully, this is a moot point because of the existence of Darrelle Revis. And Karlos Dansby brings good linebacking to the Dolphins miserable defense.  Either way, I want to win. Actually, not only do I want to win, I want it to be a blow out. I hate the Dolphins. Trading Ted Ginn Jr. was a great move for everybody, except for San Francisco I suppose. Miami dumps a complete bust and the Jets see the game 2 killer last year disappear. No more lucky kick returns! Zach Thomas also retired, so look for a bit more tinkering before the offseason is over. I don’t see the defense getting too much better, Mike Nolan was named the defensive coordinator but the failure named Bill Sheridan (See: 2009 Giants defense, oy) was named the linebackers coach. But, if they beat us twice last year with that awful team, the can certainly do it again this year with a better one. We’ve gotta win this though, end a 2 year drought and crush the Dolphins in front of everybody on Sunday Night Football.

Dolphins Pros: Brandon Marshall, Chad Henne (?), Ricky & Ronnie.

Dolphins Cons:  The Defense, WR’s that aren’t Marshall, Bill Sheridan, Chad Henne (?).

Advantage: Jets.

We play the Bills, which is automatically a W if Sanchez doesn’t decide to throw 5 goddamn interceptions. Goddamnit Sanchez. I don’t really have much nice to say here, the Bills have been running around like chickens without heads for the last decade and haven’t done much this year either. They DID get C.J. Spiller, who will make an immediate impact and might possibly light a fire under the ass of Marshawn Lynch, who is a crazy, crazy dude. They neglected to draft a QB early and that will probably come back to haunt them. The also got rid of  T.O. and while he’s undoubtedly a locker room cancer, he’s one of the best things they had going to them. They do have bright spots in Paul Posluszny, Jairus Byrd and Lee Evans however, but still the Bills wont be a playoff contender for years. Division wins are always a good thing though, and hey it’s Jets football.

Bills Pros: C.J. Spiller, Lee Evans, Paul Posluszny, Jairus Byrd

Bills Cons: Running game, Most Defensive Players, Trent Edwards, Offensive Line.

Advantage: Jets

One of our MNF games is against the Brett Favre and his Vikings. And yes, he’s coming back. I’d put money on that. Brett Favre is one of the best QB’s in the league, who posted an impressive 4,202 yards on 531 attempts, having one of the best years of his career and he’s got plenty of targets. Adrian Peterson is excellent too, with 1,383 yards on 314 attempts so our defense really has to step up for this game. The Vikings are a very well rounded team, so we’ll have to fight for every yard we get. The key to winning has to be taking advantage of AP’s fumbling, and make Favre throw picks. They didn’t do much in the offseason so what you see is what you get. They got ex-Jet Brett Favre and ex-Jet Lito Sheppard though, so look to see the Jets attempt to show them the error of their ways.

Vikings Pros: Brett Favre, Adrian Peterson, WR Corps.

Vikings Cons: Costly Turnovers.

Edge: Vikings.

This one is against the Denver Broncos. This one is an important one to me, because one of my first Jets memories was 1998. The Broncos aren’t the threat they have been in the past, now that they traded Brandon Marshall to the Fish, Champ Bailey is even older and they have a pretty questionable QB situation. Kyle Orton is by no means terrible and that goes for Knowshon Moreno as well, both are O.K. at what they do. The good news is they’re offensive players and the Jets have taken care of more high powered offenses before. Their defense is nothing special as well. Elvis Dumervil is not someone who should be regarded as a push over, but that being said, if we lose, I’d consider this one an upset.

Broncos Pros: Champ Bailey, Knowshon Moreno, Kyle Orton/Brady Quinn/Tebow (?).

Broncos Cons: Aging Stars, WR Chemistry (Lack Thereof), Coaching.

Advantage: Jets

As much as I love candy, I will not be out trick-or-treating that day. No, no, no, i’llbe watching the Jets play! On Halloween, we take on the Green Bay Packers, which will be another interesting game. Aaron Rodgers is a star in the making, posting a4,434 yards and 30 touchdowns on 541, although he got sacked 50 times, tying Ben Roethlisbergers first place, but has WR Corps chemistry that makes me drool, featuring Greg Jennings (68 receptions for 1,113 yards and 6 touchdowns) and Donald Driver, third in my mind only to Indy and San Diego, which made me sweat in early 2010. Ryan Grant is nothing special, but the Pack throws him in there to keep defenses honest. And this is ME being honest here, I love watching the Packer defense. Charles Woodson is an awesome player (but I gotta say Revis was no doubt snubbed, by the same people who voted Cushing ROTY even AFTER they learned he was a juicer.) Also, one of the most exciting defensive non-Jets to me was Clay Matthews. If he’s not picked up during plays, we’ll be seeing Sanchez or Green on their asses a lot more than we’d want to. The GB offensive line was questionable last year but they went and drafted Bryan Bulaga and resigned Mark Tauscher and Chad Clifton so it’s quite possible that may change. This will be a tough game.

Packers Pros: Aaron Rodgers, Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, Charles Woodson, Clay Matthews

Packers Cons: Offensive Line, Ryan Grant.

Advantage: Packers

Sunday, November 7, 2010

This game is against the Detroit Lions, who had a pretty good offseason, and I can see them winning 4 or 5 games this year. Matt Stafford is a good quarterback who simply doesn’t have anything to work with. They drafted Ndamukong Suh, and Jahvid Best (shout out to Payday for introducing me to him, what a beast.) Suh and Best are both incredibly explosive and will certainly give us problems, but beyond that this game will be a cakewalk at it’s very worst.

Lions Pros: Matt Stafford, Ndamukong Suh, Jahvid Best.

Lions Cons: Everything else.

Advantage: Jets

Sunday, November 14, 2010

This game is against the ex-Jets head coach, Eric Mangina and his Braylons helpless ex-team, the Cleveland Browns. This game should be just be another W for Gang Green. Jake Delhommecould help, and Colt McCoyshould help them out if he ends up being named the starter and Jerome Harrison isn’t a bad runner either, but he can’t carry all the weight and even if McCoy starts, he’s got next to no options, Mike Tannenbaum made sure of that. Josh Cribbs is an EXCELLENT return man, and he could be a threat if the Jets couldn’t stop lowly Ted Ginn Jr. Expect him to be the #2, behind Mohamed Massaquoi. Chansi Stuckey, an old Jet, is there too but he’s not a threat, to be honest.

Browns Pros: Josh Cribbs,  Mohamed Massaquoi(?), Colt McCoy/Jake Delhomme (?).

Browns Cons: Defense, WR Corps, QB’s (?).

Advantage: Jets

This weeks game is against the Houston Texans. Finishing at 9 and 7 last year, this is a franchise on the rise. Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson are great players (pro bowlers, to be precise) by themselves, and together they have great chemistry. Andre Johnson is one of  THE most impressive wideouts in the league with 101 receptions for 1,569 yards and 9 TD’s, but three numbers come to mind when I think of him and the Jets. The first one is a very big 24, the next one is a 4, and the final one is a 35. I am of course talking about Darrelle Revis’ shutdown of Andre Johnson in the first game of the ’09 season. Brian Cushingwas impressive but he is a juicing loser, so it remains to be seen if he can do it clean. Adrian Foster and Ben Tate both look promising, since Steve Slaton had neck surgery and had miserable year in 2009 anyway, but there is certainly going to be a RB competition in training camp, and nobody is really sure who is going to win that. All that needs to be done is tight coverage, and the game belongs to us. We did it before, we can do it again.

Texans Pros: Matt Schaub, Andre Johnson, Ben Tate/Steve Slaton/Adrian Foster(?), Brian Cushing (?).

Texans Cons: Brian Cushing(?), Defensive Secondary.

A Thanksgiving day take 3 for the Bengals, who try to get revenge on the Jets for embarrassing them at the end of the season, and then the following week ending their season. However, the Bengals had a pretty good team, with Cedric Benson in the backfield, and Carson Palmer is still under center, and they got better, too. They signed free agent Antonio Bryant and drafted Jermaine Gresham and Jordan Shipley, so expect them to be a team with not only a pretty decent lineup, but a massive chip on their shoulder. Chad Ochocinco should be pretty funny the week before, like always, but this will be a great game.

Bengals Pros: Carson Palmer, Cedric Benson, WR Corps.

Bengals Cons: Defense

Advantage: Jets

Round 2 against the Patriots. Everything remains the same except Santonio is off his suspension.

Sunday, December 12, 2010

Round 2 against the Dolphins. Everything remains the same except Santonio is off his suspension and the Dolphins are demoralized from the beatings the rest of the NFL gave them.

Sunday, December 19, 2010

This game is against the Steelers, a game I’m sure Santonio is hoping we win. The Steelers are led by Ben Roethlisberger. Rapist? Maybe. Good Quarterback? Definitely. He threw for 4,328 yards and 26 despite being sacked more than anybody else in the league, a whopping 50 sacks. He’ll be suspended for in the beginning of the season but by the time Gang Green rolls through he’ll be back. His targets include Hines Ward, Mike Wallace (who are both excellent targets, Hines Ward especially, he caught 95 balls for 1,167 yards and 6 touchdowns) and Antwaan Randle-El. Heath Miller is a good tight end as well, so covering him should be a priority.  Sharing the backfield with Big Ben is Rashard Mendenhall, who had a good year rushing for 1,108 yards on 242 attempts. On the defensive side, Troy Polamalu is a great safety is he manages to stay healthy. LaMarr Woodley,James Farrior and James Harrison are always consistent linebackers and Lawrence Timmons has what looks like a breakout year in front of him. Sanchez MUST think before he passes and Shonn Grenne, LT and Joe McKnight have their work cut out for them, provided this year isn’t a Black and Gold disappointment like last year.

Steelers Pros: Big Ben, WR Corps, Linebacking and DB’s.

Steelers Cons: Offensive Line, Troy Polamalu (?) and Big Ben (?).

Edge: Steelers

Sunday, December 26, 2010

This one is against the Chicago Bears. This game should be another walk in the park. Jay Cutler isn’t a bad quarterback per se, but he had a TERRIBLE year in 2009 with 3,666 yards on 555 attempts with 27 touchdowns, but a sobering 26 interceptions. Hell, he threw more of thosethan Mark Sanchez. In his defense, he  had almost nobody to throw to. Too bad nothing changed this year either. The horrid O line that let up 35 sacks got no better, and in fact, the only real upgrade the Bears got is Julius Peppers. They will benefit from the return of Brian Urlacher, but not much as he is getting older and is returning from a season ending injury. Look for Sanchez getting his stats padded, as well as Greene and LT’s too. Nothing to see here, folks.

Bears Pros: Julius Peppers, Brian Urlacher, Jay Cutler(?).

Bears Cons:  The Whole Offense.

Advantage: Jets

Sunday, January 2, 2011

What better way to ring in the new year, end a season and hopefully begin a playoff berth than by beating division rival Bills? Nothing’s different from the last meeting besides the return of Santonio.

So that’s it, really. That MY look on the 2010 season, but do keep in mind that these were simply paper predictions, and even the Lions could go undefeated, and the Jets can just as easily go winless. Any of the games that I stated the advantage was even could easily not go our way, and while some of these games should be sure wins, anything can happen. The Jets have found ways before. The term “any given Sunday” exists for a reason.
