It’s is starting to get serious with the Jets and the upcoming contract situations. Nick Mangold, arguably the best center in the NFL today, has recently said he is 50-50 on attending next weeks minicamp. The possibility of skipping minicamp comes at the time when Mangold and Darrelle Revis are both looking for long-term extensions from the Jets Front Office. Yet the Jets have not been able to satisfy either played, both of whom are becoming increasingly upset with the Jets organization.

“Of course, I think about it,” Mangold said. “I got a short career. It’s always on the back of my mind. It’s been on the back of my mind since February when they said, there’s x, y and z why weren’t not doing it.”

The center also said the contract talks have taken some of the fun out of the game this offseason.

“It takes a little bit out,” Mangodl said. “I don’t want to have to deal with it. I’m forced into dealing with it. It’s kind of a pain.”

While I am not going to sit here and act like I understand the complexities of signing these contracts in the currently unstable NFL labor environment, the Jets need to retain these players. Not only Revis and Mangold, but D-Brick and David Harris as well. All four of these guys were home-runs in recent drafts and have played admirably in Jets uniforms. If the Jets re-sign or give extensions to the four players, they will have a solid nucleus of leaders in the locker-room for years to come.

These deals need to get done ASAP. The Jets players with soon to be expiring offers really want one thing, financial security. The average person can say all the bull shit they want about how they are making millions so they should play and shut up, but in a similar position, we would all react the same way. Mangold is about as blue collar as it gets, far from some flashy and greedy Hollywood wannabe. But he is smart enough to know that the average NFL career is a short one, and you have to make your money while you can because an injury or a bad season can happen in the blink of an eye. Mangold, Revis, D-Brick and Harris are all worth every penny, and if the Jets are unwilling to pay them, someone else will be, unfortunately for us Jets Fans.
